Troop 79 – Crozet, VA

Virginia Headwater’s Council, Monticello District – Scouting America

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When and where does Crozet Troop 79 Meet?

A:  We meet almost every Tuesday evening from 7pm to 8:30pm at Crozet United Methodist Church. The space in their basement, accessed by outside steps located around the back of the church.

Q: Are you part of Crozet United Methodist Church, and if not, who is your Charter Organization?

A: No, not exactly. We are grateful to CUMC for allowing us to hold our regular weekly troop meetings, Court of Honors, and special events at their facility. However, we are proud to share our Charter Organization is White Hall Ruritan Club who we enjoy supporting in their community efforts as well whenever possible.

Q: Does the troop have a website?

A: Yes…you can find us online at www.CrozetTroop79.org

Q: Is there a published calendar of events, meetings, and outings?

A: Yes. We email this out periodically as updates are made and the latest can be found on our website www.CrozetTroop79.org/Calendar  You can also subscribe to our Google Calendar by requesting this invite from the Scoutmaster.

Q: Does my Scout have to come every week?

A: No, not at all. The youth of our Troop decided years ago to do our best to offer weekly meetings to ensure Scouts have more opportunities to participate, work on rank advancement, and simply get things done. Weekly offerings allow each Scout to prioritize and take responsibility for their family, school and sports obligations the way they see fit.

Q: How often does the Troop go camping?

A: The Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC) plans an adventure for pretty much every month of the year.  These include camping, hiking, backpacking, camporees, climbing, whitewater, scoutcraft weekends, caving, canoeing, indoor camp-ins, leadership training retreats and more.

Q: Is Troop 79 only boys?

A: Yes. We are a Boy Troop. (If you have a daughter interested in Scouting too, we can provide information about local Girl Troops in the area)

Q: What does it cost to be a Scout?

A:  The most inexpensive activity per year they will probably do is Scouting. As of 2024, it is $167, which includes our Troop Dues and National/Council Dues that pay for all awards/ranks/some uniform parts/scout book and contribute to the insurance and other admin fees of running a large organization.

However – Our Troop has some “hand me down” uniforms and we have loaner gear (so don’t go out and buy a bunch of gear right away), there are expenses for uniforms/t-shirts and various trips will cost various amounts. For camping and other adventures/activities it is a “pay to play”. For example, if you go on a backpacking trip, there may be a cost of food, whereas on a climbing trip we may have food costs and gear rental.

Camperships/Scholarships – Our Troop subscribes to the philosophy that “any Scout who wants to go to camp can go to camp” even if there is a financial need. As a troop we help each other by conducting fundraisers together that contribute to the greater cause. To learn more, please speak with either the Scoutmaster, our Treasurer or our Committee Chairman, whoever you are most comfortable doing so with.

Q: How do I sign my son up for Troop 79?

A: There is an online application which is the best way to go. There is a “Join Troop 79” button on the top right of our website which can be found at www.CrozetTroop79.org, this link will take you to our Council’s site for our Troop and from there you choose either Youth or Adult to begin the application.

Q: As a parent, the camping sounds fun, may I go on the overnight adventures too?

A: Yes, but you must become a registered Adult Leader. This is a new requirement as of Sept 1, 2023 whereas all adults that join us on overnights have completed Youth Protection Training (YPT), a completed application, dues paid, and a complete background check. Same link as above, but simply choose adult. We have many roles for Adult Leadership positions, but not all adults that register must hold a position, but rather simply offer help on a specific camp out or specific activity. Before signing up, though, please connect with Scoutmaster Schnell to answer any and all questions you may have beforehand.

Q: My son wants to join, but unsure if he wants to pursue becoming an Eagle Scout. Does he have to work toward that?

A: No he does not have to work on ranks if he doesn’t want to, but it is highly encouraged that when you join, that he works toward at least First Class Rank which embodies what it means to be a Scout (Founder of Scouting consider a 1st Class Scout one who knew the skills and philosophy of Scouting and we believe that these skills will only benefit your son) From there, once First Class, boys usually determine if they want to pursue Eagle Rank or not. If not, be assured we have several boys that are here for the adventure, fun, fellowship, and learning opportunities without going after the Eagle Rank Award.
